📚Book REC: National Indigenous Peoples Day

Today, as we honor Indigenous Peoples’ Day, I want to spotlight “Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science” by Jessica Hernandez, PhD. 🍃

I stumbled upon this book while browsing my local book store. My job role has expanded into western territory, and a population I want to learning more about is indigenous communities. Health doesn’t begin with today’s picture, it began better understanding the food ways and history of a population.

➡️ Enter this amazing book.

This book beautifully weaves together science, food history, and identity. In Dr. Hernandez’s words “communities have solutions; we must elevate their voices.” I learned so much from this book.

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to engage:
📖 Consider purchasing and reading this book
$ Donating to Indigenous-led organizations
👂🏾Listening and learning from Indigenous voices in your community.

I wrote a post a last year about seeking to understand another’s struggle. This book continued my learnings from visiting the National Museum of American Indian in New York, New York.

I teach my Son it’s not enough to stand for something, but also be “your brothers keeper“.

You can check out that post here. 👇🏾

Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!
